The Russian government plans to introduce a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptocurrency in 2026, focusing on illegal mining activities. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced that the new regulations will include criminal penalties for illegal mining and administrative fines for minor violations. Although cryptocurrency mining is currently legal in Russia, less than one-third of mining companies are registered. Some regions have already imposed mining bans due to electricity shortages. Authorities are collaborating with police, the power grid, and the FSB to enhance enforcement, utilizing smart meters, network monitoring, and drone thermal imaging to locate unregistered mining operations.
