Ripple's Chief Technology Officer Emeritus, David Schwartz, has raised questions about LayerZero's explanation of the recent KelpDAO hack, which resulted in losses exceeding $290 million. The attack, which occurred on April 18, targeted KelpDAO's rsETH configuration, reportedly due to its single Decentralized Verification Network (DVN) architecture. LayerZero claimed the sophisticated attack aimed to disrupt its downstream RPC infrastructure. Schwartz referenced a 2024 statement by LayerZero CEO Bryan Pellegrino, who asserted that no application relied entirely on LayerZero's DVN. Schwartz questioned whether the system architecture had changed since then, suggesting that if no application previously depended solely on a single DVN, the explanation for the KelpDAO vulnerability might be flawed. Ripple's research lead, Aanchal Malhotra, emphasized the need for comprehensive security evaluations, noting that infrastructure improvements alone are insufficient to prevent such incidents.
