New research identifies passive ownership as a potential predictive factor for investment returns. Test portfolios developed in collaboration with analysts Francis Sharoon and PythonTrader demonstrate that stocks heavily accumulated by passive funds tend to underperform in subsequent periods. Conversely, the data indicates that securities with lower levels of passive ownership show stronger forward performance. These findings suggest that tracking passive fund flows could serve as a contrarian indicator for portfolio construction and asset selection strategies.
