Reddit has initiated legal proceedings against Perplexity AI and three other companies, accusing them of unauthorized data scraping from its platform. The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court, names Oxylabs UAB, AWMProxy, and SerpApi as defendants, alleging they collected Reddit's data via Google search results for resale purposes. Perplexity AI is accused of purchasing this data from at least one of these companies. The lawsuit highlights the increasing value of Reddit's data, especially as AI models require vast datasets for training. While Reddit has authorized data use agreements with companies like OpenAI and Alphabet, it is actively pursuing legal action against entities that have not secured formal agreements. This follows a similar lawsuit filed against Anthropic earlier this year in San Francisco.
