The Polish Olympic Committee voted on September 14 to remove President Radoslaw Piesiewicz and named Marian Kmita as acting president until April next year following a cryptocurrency-related corruption scandal. Piesiewicz was arrested on suspicion of accepting kickbacks from now-defunct exchange Zondacrypto after signing a sponsorship agreement with the committee. Authorities began investigating in April, while reports said Zondacrypto’s former CEO gave Piesiewicz a $46,605 luxury watch in exchange for intervention with consumer protection agencies. Officials accused Zondacrypto of operating as a Ponzi scheme and having ties to nationalist opposition groups, organized crime, and Russian intelligence services. The exchange’s collapse is estimated to have caused about $94 million in losses for roughly 30,000 victims. Kmita said the committee faces financial difficulties and will immediately launch an audit to assess losses.
