PayPal Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of PayPal, is gradually winding down its operations. Established in 2016, the unit has invested in over 80 projects, including notable crypto and fintech companies such as Talos Global, Plaid, and Anchorage Digital, raising $850 million across three funds. A company spokesperson indicated that PayPal is exploring strategic options for the division as part of a broader focus strategy.
The decision follows leadership changes at PayPal, with Enrique Lores taking over as CEO in February after Alex Chriss's departure. Lores has initiated multiple restructurings, including potential layoffs and cost-cutting measures. PayPal is considering selling parts of its venture capital portfolio through the secondary market, with Jefferies engaged to assist in the process. The move reflects a shift towards "getting back to basics," as stated by Lores, focusing on re-establishing PayPal as a technology company.
