Pakistan's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (PVARA) Chairman Bilal bin Saqib has initiated discussions with Islamic scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani to address the Shariah compliance of crypto assets, including USDT. This follows Usmani's recent fatwa declaring cryptocurrencies as non-compliant with Shariah law, stating they do not qualify as "wealth" and invalidating transactions using them for goods or services. In response, Saqib advocates for tailored assessments of blockchain assets, such as stablecoins and tokenized assets, rather than a blanket approach. Pakistan is progressing with plans for sovereign stablecoin issuance, asset tokenization, and crypto exchange licensing, all requiring Shariah compliance. The outcome of these discussions could significantly influence these initiatives.
