UK consumers filed 10,092 complaints between May and August regarding banks restricting cryptocurrency purchases, according to a report by crypto advocacy group Stand With Crypto (SWC). The complaints involved 9,800 unique users and spanned all 650 UK parliamentary constituencies.
Lloyds Banking Group—including Halifax and Bank of Scotland—received the most complaints with 2,297, accounting for approximately 23% of the total. Barclays followed with 1,569 complaints, while NatWest Group received 1,278. SWC noted that Chase, Starling, and TSB were identified as institutions imposing outright bans on crypto-related transactions.
SWC emphasized that the data reflects complaints submitted through its online tool rather than a representative survey of bank customers, limiting direct comparisons of complaint rates across institutions. The findings highlight growing friction between UK retail crypto users and traditional banking partners amid evolving regulatory expectations.
