OpenAI announced on November 2 that the legacy ChatGPT Classic desktop application will be discontinued on January 30, 2027. Users of the older app will receive a shutdown notice upon launch, with a banner directing them to download the new version. Complete chat histories will automatically migrate with user accounts to the updated application.
ChatGPT Classic was the former desktop version of ChatGPT, renamed after OpenAI launched a unified desktop app in July integrating Codex and ChatGPT capabilities. The new application features three components: Chat, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. OpenAI also plans to roll out testing for merging Chat and Work functions to a small subset of users in the coming weeks, alongside consolidating usage quotas between ChatGPT and Codex into a shared allocation.
