OpenAI has decided to discontinue its collaboration with Oracle on the expansion of the Stargate data center in Abilene, Texas, opting instead to focus on deploying Nvidia's next-generation GPU clusters. The existing project in Abilene, which plans to use Nvidia Blackwell chips, is expected to be operational within a year. However, OpenAI aims to utilize even more advanced chips at other locations by that time. Oracle, which is heavily reliant on debt financing for its AI infrastructure, faces challenges as its partner Blue Owl has declined to fund new facilities. Analysts highlight the risk that rapid GPU advancements may render data center infrastructure obsolete by the time it becomes operational.
