OpenAI has announced the formation of DeployCo, a joint venture with private equity firms, to accelerate AI deployment. OpenAI will initially invest $500 million, with the option to add another $1 billion, while partners like TPG and Bain Capital will contribute $4 billion. DeployCo, valued at $10 billion, aims to integrate AI into businesses, charging fees to portfolio companies of private equity firms. Managed by former OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap, DeployCo is set to complete funding by early May.
DeployCo's business model includes embedding engineers within client companies to facilitate AI integration, a strategy similar to Palantir's. OpenAI guarantees a minimum annual return of 17.5% to investors, with expectations set higher. The venture addresses the "capability overhang" in AI, where model capabilities surpass current adoption levels. OpenAI is also working with McKinsey and Accenture to boost enterprise AI adoption, while Anthropic is pursuing a similar venture with Blackstone.
