OpenAI consumer products lead Adam Fry revealed that ChatGPT now handles search query volume equivalent to 20% of Google's total. The metric defines searches as user inputs triggering web results, excluding simple term definitions or instructions.
While still one-fifth of Google's volume, ChatGPT's search traffic significantly exceeds Bing's market share, which Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella previously noted stood at approximately 3% after more than a decade of effort. OpenAI is also introducing "intelligent UI" features that generate visual and interactive interfaces within chatbot responses. The company views advertising as a potential revenue path, with Fry stating ads have not yet negatively impacted product quality or user experience. Fry did not disclose the source of Google's search volume data.
