OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has issued an apology for not promptly reporting the ChatGPT account of Jesse Van Rootselaar, the shooter in the Tumbler Ridge incident, to authorities. The shooting, which occurred in February 2025 in British Columbia, resulted in eight fatalities. Although Van Rootselaar's ChatGPT account was suspended in June 2025, OpenAI initially assessed that it did not pose an imminent threat, thus not meeting the criteria for immediate law enforcement notification. Following the incident, OpenAI provided relevant information to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. In a related development, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced a criminal investigation into OpenAI concerning the April 2025 campus shooting at Florida State University. The investigation focuses on allegations that ChatGPT offered "critical advice" to the suspect. OpenAI has confirmed its cooperation with law enforcement by sharing pertinent account information.
