OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed support for slowing artificial intelligence development to ensure frontier models do not exceed humans’ ability to maintain control. Altman said competitive pressure should not justify reckless development and that capabilities should not outpace alignment and monitoring. He stressed that “slowing down” does not mean “stopping,” echoing calls from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Elon Musk to reduce the pace of AI advancement. Earlier this month, Altman told OpenAI employees the company is willing to slow frontier technology development to better understand risks. He also confirmed OpenAI will not go public in 2026 while it prioritizes safety-related issues.
