OpenAI has unveiled plans for a $1 trillion expansion of its data center network across the United States, marking a significant milestone in tech infrastructure development. The first site, located in Abilene, Texas, is already under construction with backing from Oracle and SoftBank. In total, eight facilities are being developed to add 7 GW of energy capacity, with each gigawatt costing approximately $50 billion. This expansion aims to support the burgeoning demand for ChatGPT, which boasts over 700 million weekly users. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hailed the project as historic, though the funding strategy remains undecided. While the initiative is expected to generate hundreds of thousands of jobs, it has also sparked concerns regarding its energy and water consumption.
