OpenAI has partnered with Google DeepMind to integrate SynthID invisible watermarking into images generated by ChatGPT, Codex, and APIs, aligning with the C2PA image credential standard. This collaboration enhances image authenticity by embedding imperceptible identifiers directly into image pixels, ensuring persistence even after secondary processing like screenshots.
In addition to watermarking, OpenAI has launched a public preview of its image authenticity verification tool. Users can upload images to a dedicated website to check for OpenAI Content Credentials or SynthID watermarks. Despite these advancements, OpenAI cautions that the absence of authentication signals does not conclusively indicate an image is not AI-generated, as extreme conditions can strip watermarks and metadata.
