OpenAI has urged the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to include AI chatbots with search capabilities on Google's search selection page. In feedback submitted on March 6, OpenAI emphasized that services like ChatGPT should be eligible as default search providers on Android devices and browsers like Chrome. The company argues that AI chatbots can facilitate broad information discovery, similar to Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and should not be excluded by traditional search criteria.
OpenAI also proposed that the selection of services be based on transparent popularity metrics and cover all functionalities, including voice and visual search. Additionally, OpenAI called for Google to ensure technical interoperability, expedite deployment timelines, and offer publishers a unified opt-out mechanism for their content's use by AI services.
