OKX has obtained a Payment Institution (PI) license in Malta, aligning its stablecoin-related services with the upcoming EU Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation and the Second Payment Services Directive (PSD2), effective March 2026. The new regulations require crypto asset service providers to hold a PI or Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license for stablecoin payment services, classified as electronic money tokens (EMT) in the EU. OKX stated that this license will enable it to continue offering stablecoin payment services across the EU, including OKX Pay and OKX Card. Last month, OKX partnered with Mastercard to launch a crypto payment card in Europe.
