Offchain Labs has expressed concerns over Vitalik Buterin's proposal to use RISC-V for Ethereum's execution layer, advocating instead for WebAssembly (WASM) as a superior alternative. The researchers argue that WASM offers better long-term benefits, including enhanced code modification capabilities, hardware compatibility, and security features.
In support of their stance, Offchain Labs showcased an Arbitrum prototype that compiles WASM-based Stylus contracts into RISC-V for zero-knowledge proofs, achieving a cost efficiency of $0.025 per block. They caution that adopting RISC-V could restrict Ethereum's future flexibility, whereas WASM provides a more adaptable framework for smart contract delivery.
