A report by the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT) reveals that North Korean hackers have stolen $1.65 billion in virtual assets in the first nine months of 2025. The report, involving 11 countries including the United States, Japan, and South Korea, highlights that from January 2024 to September 2025, North Korean groups have illicitly acquired at least $2.837 billion in cryptocurrencies by targeting global exchanges.
The report details how North Korea launders these funds through intermediaries in Russia, Hong Kong, and Cambodia, utilizing platforms like Huione Payment to convert crypto assets into cash. Additionally, North Korea collaborates with Russian ransomware groups and employs AI tools to enhance the stealth of its cyber operations. The country also employs 1,000 to 2,000 IT personnel working remotely under false identities in various countries, funneling their earnings back to North Korea to support its nuclear and missile programs.
