Greenafrica, a Nigerian environmental verification platform, has emerged as the top winner of the 2025 Hedera Africa Hackathon, securing a $100,000 prize. The event, organized by The Hashgraph Association and Exponential Science, attracted over 45,000 participants and received more than 1,300 project submissions. The hackathon, described as the largest Web3 event to date, focused on utilizing Hedera's distributed ledger technology to tackle infrastructure challenges in emerging markets.
The $1 million prize pool was distributed across four thematic tracks, with Greenafrica taking the "cross-track champion" title. Other notable winners included Egypt's Carboni Renewable Energy Certificate Platform and Mexico's Effisend X Africa. The Hashgraph Association also announced the formation of a new investment committee to support developers in emerging markets with capital and mentorship. The hackathon is set to return in 2026.
