New York’s consumer protection agency has issued a warning over AI-driven investment scams, saying U.S. investment fraud losses exceeded $8 billion in 2025, up 38% year over year. Median losses reached $10,560, with scammers using cloned voices, fabricated videos, impersonated financial professionals and realistic social media ads to promote fake crypto projects.
State officials said scam activity has included deepfake celebrity endorsements, fraudulent cryptocurrencies, pump-and-dump schemes and fake trading platforms. Separately, Australian regulators said they had taken down 3,106 scam crypto investment platforms in fiscal 2026.
New York officials urged consumers to verify promoters’ identities, confirm the legitimacy of companies and investment products, and understand where funds are being sent. They also warned against offers that promise guaranteed returns, use unsolicited outreach, apply high-pressure sales tactics or lack clear documentation.
