Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has identified a new malware, "Stealka," which targets cryptocurrency wallets and browser extensions by masquerading as video game cheats and mods. Discovered in November, Stealka is used by attackers to hijack accounts, steal cryptocurrencies, and install crypto miners on victims' computers. The malware is distributed through legitimate platforms like GitHub and Google Sites, often disguised as mods for games like Roblox and software cracks for applications such as Microsoft Visio. Stealka poses a significant threat to over 100 browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, by targeting autofill data and settings of 115 browser extensions for crypto wallets and password managers. It specifically targets popular crypto wallets such as Binance, Coinbase, and MetaMask. Messaging apps like Discord and Telegram, along with email clients and VPN applications, are also at risk. Kaspersky advises users to avoid pirated software and unofficial game mods and to use reliable antivirus software to protect against such threats.
