The UK National Crime Agency (NCA) has disclosed that a Russian cash-to-crypto money laundering network was used to finance a spy ring associated with former Wirecard executive Jan Marsalek. This revelation, reported on November 21, highlights the involvement of Russian intelligence in supporting espionage activities through cryptocurrency channels. The spy ring, consisting of six Bulgarian nationals, was found guilty of espionage, monitoring journalists and politicians, and planning assassinations. The NCA's investigation follows the dismantling of two Russian money laundering networks a year prior, which had facilitated the movement of billions globally. One of these networks was specifically linked to funding the Marsalek spy group, which UK police identified as a significant threat before its disruption.
