muShanghai, a 28-day pop-up tech city event, has drawn over 800 global tech entrepreneurs to Shanghai, marking a significant milestone in China's efforts to foster international innovation. Held at the Alibaba Center in Hongqiao, the event selected participants from over 2,000 applicants, with 46% working in AI or machine learning and 16% in hardware and robotics. This initiative aligns with China's 15th Five-Year Plan to expand high-level scientific and technological openness and cooperation. The event, organized by Sun, founder of The Mu community, aims to create a dense network of talent and foster deep human connections among participants. Despite challenges such as ticket pricing controversies and sponsorship tensions, muShanghai has successfully attracted a diverse group of international attendees, who paid their own way to participate. The event's structure includes thematic weeks focusing on AI, biotechnology, hardware, and culture, emphasizing the importance of building trust and meaningful relationships over time.
