Moldova's National Anti-Corruption Center has revealed a $107 million cryptocurrency scheme allegedly orchestrated by Russia to influence the country's 2025 parliamentary elections. The funds, transferred through non-custodial crypto wallets, were reportedly used for candidate campaigning, voter bribery, and organizing protests.
Investigations traced the funds to two centralized crypto platforms in Russia and Kyrgyzstan, both under international sanctions. TRM Labs' analysis suggests the operation is part of a broader Russian-backed effort to evade sanctions, with transactions linked to the Kyrgyz exchange TokenSpot and the sanctioned Russian exchange Garantex.
