Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has signed a bipartisan bill to ban virtual currency kiosks in the state later this year, following significant concerns over scams. State officials report that Minnesota residents have lost nearly $1 million to crypto kiosk scams over the past three years, with a notable increase in complaints and losses in 2025. The state currently hosts around 350 such kiosks, including 110 operated by Bitcoin Depot. The decision comes as state regulators and law enforcement highlight the ease with which fraudsters exploit these machines, directing victims to deposit cash that is then converted into cryptocurrency, making recovery difficult. Despite calls from operators like CoinFlip for stricter regulations rather than a ban, lawmakers have moved forward, citing the ineffectiveness of existing safeguards. Minnesota follows Indiana and Tennessee, which have also enacted similar bans this year.
