Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has initiated a survey to gather data on cryptocurrency ATM usage in an effort to combat rising scams. The survey aims to collect information on user habits, machine preferences, referral sources, and financial losses, with a particular focus on altcoins and on-chain data. This initiative comes in response to FBI reports indicating $246.7 million in losses from crypto ATM scams in 2024, with Minnesota experiencing a significant increase. The survey follows a December 19 alert and a lawsuit in Washington D.C. against Athena Bitcoin, a company reportedly responsible for handling 93% of scam-related deposits. The Attorney General's office hopes the survey will provide insights to better protect consumers from fraudulent activities associated with crypto ATMs.
