Microsoft released an AI-assisted WinUI development and migration framework designed to reduce reliance on WebView2, Electron and other web-wrapper apps on Windows 11.
The new approach uses VS Code, Windows App Development CLI, WinUI templates and GitHub Copilot, claiming developers can generate and submit a native WinUI 3 app from an empty folder in about 30 minutes. Microsoft also provided AI-assisted migration guidance for moving WPF and UWP apps to WinUI, including mapping tables for controls, threading, window management, DPI and data binding.
Microsoft is also strengthening WinUI memory usage, DataGrid and chart support, and open-source participation, while rewriting system components including AutoPlay and Print Management with WinUI to encourage developers to move from web shells to native WinUI apps.
