Meta has partnered with Overview Energy to reserve up to 1 GW of space-based solar power to support its future AI data centers. Overview's technology involves satellites in geosynchronous orbit that absorb sunlight and transmit it as low-intensity near-infrared light to ground stations, which convert it into electricity. This setup allows for continuous power generation, even after sunset.
Additionally, Meta is collaborating with Noon Energy to secure 1 GW/100 GWh of ultra-long-duration energy storage using reversible solid oxide fuel cells and carbon-based storage, capable of storing electricity for over 100 hours. A pilot project of 25 MW/2.5 GWh is expected by 2028. While Meta has already secured over 30 GW of clean energy, the space-based solution is still in early stages, with commercial power delivery anticipated by 2030 if successful.
