Meta has announced the cessation of virtual reality world-building on Meta Quest headsets, effective June 15. Users will no longer be able to build, publish, or update VR worlds or access Meta Horizon Worlds via Quest devices. Instead, the focus will shift to the Meta Horizon mobile app, aligning with the company's mobile-first strategy. This decision follows Meta's earlier layoffs of around 1,000 employees from its Reality Labs division and the closure of several VR gaming and content studios. Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth emphasized the company's pivot towards mobile experiences and wearable products, such as the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, as part of its AI advancement goals. This move signifies a departure from Meta's previous metaverse ambitions.
