Marc Andreessen, co-founder of a16z, has been appointed as co-chair of the Federal Reserve's AI task force. The group, which includes Stanford economist Charles I. Jones and Microsoft EVP Asha Sharma, will explore AI's impact on productivity and employment. Operating independently, the task force will provide research and feedback to the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) but will not have rate-setting authority. FOMC members are divided on AI's inflationary impact, with some seeing productivity gains as deflationary, while others cite potential inflation from increased spending on chips and data centers. This appointment is part of a broader initiative by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, who has established five task forces focusing on communication, balance sheet, data quality, and inflation measurement.
