Maine regulators have reached a $1.9 million settlement with Bitcoin Depot, a cryptocurrency ATM operator, to compensate consumers affected by third-party fraud. This settlement follows a two-year investigation and grants Bitcoin Depot a legal operating license in the state.
The settlement comes amid rising concerns over cryptocurrency ATM-related fraud, with FBI data indicating losses of $246 million in 2024, marking a 99% increase from the previous year. Notably, 43% of the victims were seniors over 60, often targeted by scammers who persuade them to convert cash into cryptocurrency and transfer it to fraudulent accounts.
