Libyan authorities have intensified their crackdown on illegal Bitcoin mining operations. In November 2025, prosecutors charged nine individuals for operating Bitcoin mining equipment within a steel plant in Zliten. The accused were sentenced to three years in prison, and the court ordered the confiscation of the mining equipment and the return of illicit profits. Libya, known for its extremely low electricity costs of $0.004 per kilowatt-hour, has been a hotspot for cryptocurrency mining. In 2021, the country contributed approximately 0.6% of the global Bitcoin hash rate, surpassing several European economies.
