Security researcher Tayvano successfully traced the Ledger drainer by identifying gas payments funded through an affiliated wallet. The investigation revealed that despite the use of Zcash for obfuscation, the attacker's operational security was compromised by this funding connection. The findings highlight how transaction fees can serve as critical forensic evidence in tracking illicit crypto activities. This case demonstrates that even privacy-focused assets like Zcash may not fully protect threat actors when operational links exist between wallets used for gas and malicious infrastructure.
