Japanese convenience store chain Lawson is set to launch a pilot program for JPYC stablecoin payments at its Tokyo Gateway City location in early August. Partnering with digital asset wallet provider Hashport, the initiative will allow customers to make payments using a smartphone e-wallet. This marks Japan's first trial of stablecoin payments integrated with a point-of-sale (POS) system.
The pilot aims to assess the stability of POS integration and the efficiency of transaction times. By connecting stablecoin payments with the POS system, Lawson can manage purchase data, including item quantity and payment time, within its existing store management framework. The results of this experiment will inform Lawson's decision on whether to implement the system more broadly.
