Kazakhstan is advancing a plan to permit cryptocurrency miners to generate electricity using associated gas from oil extraction, aiming to reduce gas flaring and ease pressure on the national grid. The Ministry of Energy reports that 300 million to 340 million cubic meters of associated petroleum gas were flared in 2024 across 40 to 60 fields, representing an estimated 1.2 to 1.3 terawatt-hours of potential power generation. Authorities are currently drafting a legal framework to regulate this model, which seeks to lower miners' electricity costs while mitigating environmental impact. This initiative follows previous restrictions on mining operations imposed after rapid industry growth strained the country's power supply infrastructure.
