Prediction market platforms Kalshi and Polymarket are leveraging meme culture and gamified features to attract younger users, according to Fortune magazine. These platforms engage users with leaderboards, badges, and interactive comments, while setting the minimum participation age at 18, below the typical legal gambling age of 21 in most U.S. states. Despite the appeal, only a few top users profit from Polymarket, with about 69% of users experiencing losses.
Concerns are rising over the potential for young users to develop risky investment habits, as their cognitive development is still maturing. In response, U.S. Senators Katie Britt and Richard Blumenthal have introduced legislation aimed at limiting minors' exposure to prediction market advertising.
