India's central government has issued a blocking order against Polymarket and is set to extend the same to Kalshi by Friday, according to an official from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. This move is part of enforcing a ban on prediction market platforms operating in India. Despite previous requests to cease operations, both platforms have continued to allow Indian users to register and trade.
The blocking orders will be issued under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, requiring internet service providers to block access at the network level. Non-compliance could result in intermediaries facing up to seven years in prison and fines. This enforcement follows the enactment of the Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Act 2025 on May 1, which prohibits real-money online games and related activities in India.
