India has become ChatGPT's largest market globally by weekly active users, with local user numbers doubling since January 2026, according to Prabhjeet Singh, Managing Director of OpenAI India. Singh announced that OpenAI plans to roll out UPI (Unified Payments Interface) and payment-related features within the coming weeks. He also noted that enterprise customers are transitioning from pilot and demo stages to scaled production deployments across the country. Addressing concerns about potential misuse of autonomous AI agents, Singh stated that OpenAI is collaborating with government agencies and enterprises to protect critical infrastructure. Singh joined OpenAI in August 2026, and this marks his first media interview since taking the role.
