IBM's Chief Technology Officer for Quantum Safe, Michael Osborne, has cautioned that Bitcoin's cryptographic security could be at risk from quantum computing advancements by 2029. IBM plans to launch its first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer, Starling, which is expected to perform 20,000 times more operations than current models. Osborne highlighted that the number of logical qubits needed to break Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography depends on the attacker's time investment, warning that initial quantum attacks might target dormant wallets without public announcement. He likened the urgency of transitioning to post-quantum cryptography to the Y2K crisis, suggesting that market movements could signal emerging quantum threats.
