HSBC has become the first institution approved by the Bank of England to operate within the UK Digital Securities Sandbox (DSS). The bank's digital asset platform, HSBC Orion, will function as a Digital Securities Depository, facilitating the issuance, custody, and settlement of native digital bonds, including the digital gilt DIGIT and corporate bonds. The DSS, managed by the Bank of England and the UK Financial Conduct Authority, offers a regulatory framework for testing distributed ledger technology in securities markets.
The UK Chancellor of the Exchequer has announced that the first issuance of DIGIT is anticipated early next year. HSBC Orion has already supported over $5 billion in digital bond issuances, marking a significant step in the integration of digital assets into traditional financial systems.
