A 60-year-old woman in Hong Kong lost approximately HK$21.5 million after being deceived into investing on a fraudulent cryptocurrency platform. The victim met a self-proclaimed "investment expert" through an online platform who directed her to transfer funds repeatedly between April 14 and September 22, claiming additional deposits were required as security bonds to prove the account was not used for money laundering.
The victim reported the incident to police on October 3 after suspecting fraud. Authorities have classified the case as obtaining property by deception and assigned it to the Sau Mau Ping Criminal Investigation Team. No arrests have been made, and police warned that conviction for this offense carries a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment.
