Hong Kong police have uncovered a cryptocurrency scam in which a 66-year-old retiree was defrauded of HK$6.6 million over six months. The victim was initially convinced by a "cryptocurrency investment expert" to invest HK$1.4 million. In a bid to recover his losses, he paid an additional HK$600,000 to another "expert" and was subsequently persuaded to purchase HK$4.6 million worth of cryptocurrency, which he transferred to a designated account. The scammers vanished after receiving the funds.
The Hong Kong Police Cyber Crime Bureau's "Cyber Guardians" disclosed the case, highlighting the dangers of trusting "guaranteed profit" investments and "loss recovery" services. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant against such fraudulent schemes.
