Hollywood film studios and production companies are issuing internal guidelines prohibiting employees from using insider information to bet on prediction markets. The rules ban wagers on studio earnings, casting decisions, release dates, and award nominations, while also forbidding employees from passing non-public information to family or friends for indirect betting.
Penske Media, parent company of The Hollywood Reporter, recently updated its employee handbook to enforce these restrictions. At least one studio has established an anonymous hotline for reporting suspected insider betting among colleagues.
However, enforcement may prove challenging. Columbia University law professor Joshua Mitts noted that blockchain-based prediction market transactions could be "basically untraceable" if insiders use mixers and layer their identities, raising questions about how employers can police such activity beyond ethical guidelines.
