The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has clarified that a fraudulent digital Hong Kong dollar (e-HKD) lending scheme circulating online is entirely unrelated to the authority. The scam lures victims into signing agreements by falsely claiming loans will be converted into e-HKD assets.
The HKMA stated it does not contact the public regarding personal financial matters or request money transfers. Additionally, institutions participating in the e-HKD Pilot Programme and other sandbox initiatives are prohibited from raising funds from the public or offering wealth management and investment products.
Authorities have referred the case to the Hong Kong Police. Individuals who have submitted personal information to the fraudulent websites or apps are advised to contact the police hotline at 2860 5012.
