Harvard University, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Harvard Management Company, has invested in Bitcoin and Ethereum. The funds for these investments primarily come from alumni donations, which have grown to $56.9 billion in the 2025 fiscal year, making it the largest university endowment fund globally. Instead of holding cryptocurrencies directly, Harvard has opted to invest indirectly by purchasing ETFs. Specifically, they have chosen BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF, one of the largest spot Bitcoin ETFs in the world, referred to as IBIT.
