The Central Bank of Ghana has mandated all regulated financial institutions to cease support for unauthorized foreign currency digital wallet services offered by cryptocurrency platforms. This directive, effective immediately, targets services denominated in foreign currencies, primarily US dollars, which integrate with the local banking system through various channels. The Central Bank emphasized that these platforms lack the necessary approvals under the Payment Systems and Services Act 2019 and the Foreign Exchange Act 2006, rendering their operations illegal.
The directive applies to banks, depository institutions, electronic money issuers, and payment service providers, prohibiting any arrangements supporting these unauthorized fiat currency wallet systems. Institutions failing to comply will face regulatory or enforcement actions. Additionally, the Central Bank has set up a Virtual Asset Service Desk to assist businesses with compliance inquiries.
