Alex Thorn, Head of Research at Galaxy, has raised doubts about reports suggesting Iran is demanding Bitcoin as payment for transit fees through the Strait of Hormuz. The Financial Times claimed Iran plans to charge $1 per barrel of oil in Bitcoin, while Bloomberg indicated payments might be made in stablecoins or renminbi. However, TRM Labs found no evidence of large-scale cryptocurrency usage for these payments.
Thorn highlighted that if the reports were accurate, Bitcoin could provide censorship-resistant payment benefits, though large transactions face challenges on the blockchain and Lightning Network. Galaxy Research intends to verify these claims by analyzing vessel AIS data alongside on-chain transactions.
