FTX's early investment in AI startup Anthropic, co-founded by former OpenAI executive Dario Amodei, could have been worth $28 billion if the crypto exchange had not collapsed. In April 2021, FTX, led by Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), invested $500 million in Anthropic, securing approximately 13.56% equity, later diluted to about 8%. However, FTX's bankruptcy in November 2022 led to the liquidation of its assets, including its stake in Anthropic. By 2024, FTX's bankruptcy management team sold two-thirds of its Anthropic shares, raising approximately $884 million, and eventually recovered $1.3 to $1.4 billion in total. As Anthropic's valuation soared, driven by investments from tech giants like Amazon and Google, the company's pre-funding valuation reached $350 billion. If FTX had retained its stake, it could have been worth $28 billion, highlighting a missed opportunity for SBF, who is now serving a 25-year sentence.
